Starknet Community Explores Transition to Sovereign Layer 1 Network

Thu22 Oct 202614:12 UTCHSHunain ShahMarkets Reporter

The Starknet community has officially backed an initiative to study whether the zero knowledge rollup should migrate from its current status as an Ethereum Layer 2 network into an independent Layer 1 blockchain. The proposal, which moved through community discourse channels before receiving formal temperature check support, opens up technical research into what sovereign execution and settlement would look like for the ecosystem.

Starknet originally launched to scale Ethereum by bundling transactions off chain using STARK proofs, settling proofs periodically back to the Ethereum mainnet. While this model grants Ethereum level security, it also anchors network execution and gas fee structures to Ethereum data availability costs. Core developers and researchers backing the exploratory study argue that an autonomous Layer 1 architecture could offer greater monetary sovereignty, allow customized consensus mechanics, and provide direct fee capture for network validators.

Discussions surrounding the shift highlight a growing divergence in how high performance rollups view their relationship with Ethereum. Over the past year, multiple Layer 2 teams have weighed the trade offs between remaining tied to Ethereum liquidity versus deploying their own validator sets. For Starknet, operating as an independent chain would grant developers full control over sequencer decentralization, settlement rules, and execution upgrades without waiting for Ethereum improvement proposals to clear.

Despite the enthusiasm from community members, several developers have urged caution. Decoupling completely from Ethereum could disrupt liquidity pipelines and impact decentralized finance protocols that rely on direct bridging guarantees with mainnet ETH. As a compromise, researchers are examining hybrid setups, where Starknet could function as a sovereign Layer 1 while maintaining dedicated proof verification or state anchoring on Ethereum to preserve security assurances.

Governance contributors emphasized that the recent vote does not implement immediate protocol changes. Instead, it funds technical working groups tasked with analyzing security requirements, validator incentives, and bridging architectures over the coming quarters. The findings from this research phase will determine whether a formal migration proposal goes to a binding vote later in 2026.
